New leadership for Benalla Street Art Festival

Benalla Rural City Council is thrilled to announce that renowned curator Simon Grant will lead the artistic vision for the 2026 Benalla Street Art Festival. Council is also delighted to welcome Ian Gonzaga as the new Chair of the Benalla Street Art Advisory Committee.

The 2026 Benalla Street Art Festival, scheduled for 17–19 April 2026, will continue the Rural City’s transformation into a premier regional destination for world-class street art. Mr Grant, who joins as curator for the first time in 2026, is widely respected for his work in contemporary art and culture.

“Benalla has a special place in the global street art scene, and I am excited to bring a compelling lineup of talent and diverse artistic styles,” said Mr Grant. “The 2026 festival will be about building on the incredible collection that already exists in Benalla, infusing the streets with fresh energy, and showcasing art that inspires conversation and pride.”

The Benalla Street Art Advisory Committee also welcomes its new Chair, Ian Gonzaga. He steps into the role with a deep commitment to the arts and a strong background in marketing.

Mayor of Benalla Rural City, Cr Bernie Hearn, commended the appointments, highlighting the value the advisory committee bring to the community.

“We are fortunate to have someone of Ian Gonzaga’s calibre and passion to lead our Advisory Committee. His leadership will be vital as the festival grows, ensuring it remains focused on our community and continues to deliver real economic and cultural benefits to Benalla Rural City.”

Ian Gonzaga expressed his enthusiasm for the role, stating, “I am honoured to accept the position as Chair. The Benalla Street Art Festival is a jewel in our Rural City’s crown, and I look forward to working with Council, our new curator Simon Grant, and the dedicated committee members to guide its future success and solidify Benalla’s reputation as the street art capital of regional Australia.”

The 2026 festival promises a vibrant program of live mural painting, artist talks, and workshops. It is a major driver of tourism, attracting thousands of visitors to explore the city’s growing collection of over 85 spectacular murals. Expressions of Interest for fringe events are now open, with the full artist line-up to be released in early 2026.
