Seniors Festival shines a light on positive ageing

10 November 2025

Benalla Rural City Council has concluded its month-long celebration of the 2025 Victorian Seniors Festival, honouring our senior residents and their vital role in the community. More than 1,000 people took part in events held throughout October.

Spanning five weeks, the festival featured over 40 free or low-cost activities across Benalla and surrounding districts—encouraging lifelong learning, creativity, and connection among local seniors.

Mayor Cr Bernie Hearn said the Seniors Festival was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the contributions of the residents in our community.

“The festival recognised and celebrated our seniors, encouraging connection and creating spaces where people of all ages feel valued and included,” Cr Hearn said.

“I’m proud of the diverse and engaging program we’ve delivered this year, and grateful to everyone who helped make it such a success.”

This year’s program featured a multicultural morning tea, an art trail, digital mentoring, fitness and wellness workshops and community gatherings, all designed to inspire participation and joy.

Highlights included:

  • World Flavours Morning Tea – a vibrant celebration of food, music, and dance.
  • Elvis and Marilyn Tribute Show – a crowd favourite.
  • High Tea and Fashion Parade – elegance and entertainment.
  • Benalla Art Trail Guided Street Art Tours – showcasing local creativity.
  • Interactive workshops – Tai Chi, Mah-jong, gardening, and digital skills.
  •

Cr Hearn said the Council was committed to building an age-friendly community where people are active, engaged, and valued.

“With more than 20 per cent of our population aged 60 and over, the Seniors Festival is a key part of Council’s ongoing support for inclusion, wellbeing, and lifelong participation in the community,” Cr Hearn said.

The festival was delivered with support from the Victorian Government as part of the state-wide Victorian Seniors Festival, in partnership with local Councils, community organisations, and cultural groups.
