Supported Playgroup helps local families build strong foundations

25 July 2025

Families in Benalla Rural City are encouraged to take part in Council’s Supported Playgroup – a free program that helps parents and carers build skills, confidence and community connection while supporting their child’s early development.

Run during school terms, Supported Playgroup offers weekly sessions designed for families with children aged from birth to school age. The sessions are facilitated by a trained early years professional and are based on the evidence-based Smalltalk program, which promotes positive parenting practices and quality everyday interactions.

Each session provides a safe, relaxed and welcoming environment where parents and carers can connect with others, share experiences, and build confidence in their parenting. Children are supported to explore, play and learn, while enjoying a nutritious morning tea and a range of age-appropriate activities.

Mayor Cr Bernie Hearn said the program plays a vital role in supporting families in Benalla Rural City.

“Supported Playgroup gives families the chance to come together in a nurturing space where they can learn from one another,” Cr Hearn said.

“Parents are introduced to simple but powerful strategies to support their child’s early learning and development. It’s not just about play – it’s about giving children and families the tools they need to thrive.”

In addition to the weekly group sessions, eligible families also have access to In-Home Coaching – five home visits per school term to help reinforce learnings from the group and provide more individualised support.

To join Supported Playgroup, families must meet one or more eligibility criteria. These include holding a Health Care Card, identifying as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, having been referred by The Orange Door or Child Protection, or participating in Enhanced Maternal and Child Health.

Cr Hearn said the program reflects Council’s commitment to creating safe, supportive environments for children and families.

“Council is focused on supporting the wellbeing of our youngest residents and those who care for them. Supported Playgroup is one of the many ways we help families get off to a great start,” she said.

Referrals to the program can be made by professionals with the consent of the family, or families can self-refer by contacting the Supported Playgroup team.
