Council seeks interest from First Nations artists

Call for artists

In a step towards recognising our First Nations’ cultural heritage, the Benalla Rural City Council is inviting local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists to submit an Expression of Interest to create an artwork that reflects the local people, communities and/or landscape of Benalla Rural City, and celebrates the culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The selected artwork/s will feature in Benalla Rural City Council's first Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan 2024-2026 and will also be showcased at various Council venues and community celebrations.

Interested Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander artists living on Yorta Yorta or Taungurung Country are invited to submit their Expressions of Interest (EOIs), including a letter outlining the artist’s connection to Country, a CV, and a portfolio showcasing their artistic practice by close of business on Friday 1 March 2024.

Shortlisted artists will be invited to submit a concept design. A panel comprising members of Benalla’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and Council representatives will select the final artwork/s.

With their first Reconciliation Action Plan Benalla Rural City Council will join several other local organisations such as Benalla Health, Thales and neighbouring local councils in undertaking an important step towards reconciliation.
