Lake Benalla & Other Waterways

On a hot summer’s day, Lake Benalla may be a tempting sight for swimmers. However, the Council does not recommend swimming in Lake Benalla.

Testing of water quality in Lake Benalla indicates the higher than acceptable presence of organisms that indicate faecal contamination. Heavy rain or periods of heat tend to worsen the contamination levels.

Children, the elderly and people with a suppressed immune system are at higher risk of illness from the pathogens associated with faecal contamination. However, we don’t recommend swimming in the lake for anyone.

The Council has had signs erected around the lake to warn people about the dangers of swimming in Lake Benalla.

There are other waterways around Benalla Rural City that are suitable for recreational swimming, such as Lake Nillahcootie.  Contact Goulburn-Murray Water for more information.
