Asbestos

For information about asbestos removal within Benalla Rural City, go to our Asbestos Disposal page.

Asbestos is a group of naturally occurring silicate materials used in many building materials before the 1980s. Asbestos doesn’t generally cause risk to human health unless it is disturbed, releasing hazardous fibres and dust into the air.

The amount of asbestos that causes asbestos poisoning is not known. Therefore, if you have asbestos in your home that you want to get rid of, or if you are doing general maintenance in a home that was built before 1980, you need to ensure that you limit your exposure to the dust and fibres of asbestos.

For more information about asbestos, visit the Victorian Asbestos website.

Asbestos removal conducted by licenced builders or on commercial building sites must be carried out by a licenced asbestos removalist contractor. You can use WorkSafe's Service Providers Directory to find a licensed asbestos removalist.

If you have concerns about the removal of asbestos being carried out by building contractors or on a commercial site, please contact Worksafe or call the Customer Service Team on 03 5760 2600.
