Asbestos Disposal

The Benalla Landfill and Resource Recovery Centre has an asbestos disposal facility. You need to apply to dispose of small quantities of domestic asbestos at the landfill. All asbestos that is disposed of at the Benalla Landfill needs to come from within the municipality.

Call us on 03 5760 2600 to discuss the disposal of asbestos.

Note - you must fill in the form at the bottom of this page to apply to dispose of asbestos. There is limited capacity at the facility, so we may not always be able to accept your disposal. Acceptance of asbestos is at the complete discretion of our operators, so always give us a call first to discuss disposal.

What asbestos types can I dispose of?

We are not licensed to accept asbestos from commercial operators or sources. We can only accept asbestos waste from domestic sources within Benalla Rural City.

According to the Occupational Health & Safety Regulations 2007, an unlicensed person may remove non-friable asbestos material if the area does not exceed ten square metres and takes less than an hour to remove within seven days. All other removal must be undertaken and disposed of by a licensed commercial contractor.

Fibre cement sheeting

Fibre cement sheet can be hard to distinguish from asbestos waste. Considering the risks involved in dealing with asbestos, only material that is clearly from new building work can be treated as fibre cement sheeting. All other material must be treated as asbestos.

Process

Always call us on 03 5760 2600 to let us know that you are considering disposing of asbestos at our facility. We cannot accept many asbestos disposal applications. To avoid disappointment or inconvenience, talk to us first and we can make sure you are on the right track.

  1. Package asbestos for disposal

Removal, handling and packaging of asbestos must be carried out in accordance with the methods detailed in Asbestos – A Guide for householders and the general public, which can be found on the Department of Health website.

Note that you must carefully package the waste, including any offcuts, in two layers of 0.2 mm thick polythene sheeting. The packages must then be labelled ‘ASBESTOS WASTE’ using a permanent marker pen.

We won’t be able to accept any asbestos waste that doesn’t meet these guidelines.

  2. Application to dispose of asbestos

You need to apply to dispose of asbestos at Benalla Landfill and Resource Recovery Centre. Please allow five days for your application to process. You’ll need to know the size of the asbestos you are trying to dispose. Unfortunately, we won’t always be able to accept your application and a decision will need to be made according to our capacity.

Note that the disposal charge is $213 per 100kg. Payment is to be made by cash or EFTPOS at the time of disposal (except for approved account customers).

You can obtain a hard copy of the application from the Customer Service Centre and bring it to the Landfill at your booking time, or fill in the online application form at the bottom of this page.

  3. Make a booking

If your application has been successful, you can make a booking with Benalla Landfill and Resource Recovery Centre by contacting the Customer Service Centre on 03 5760 2600.

  4. Transporting and unloading your asbestos

Pack your asbestos waste so it can be easily and safely unloaded by the person transporting it. The Asbestos Disposal Facility is 1 metre high. You’ll need to be able to make sure you are capable of lifting your asbestos waste into the Facility (pictured).
